Priors and Desires: a Model of Optimism, Pessimism, and Cognitive Dissonance

چکیده

This paper offers a model of optimism, pessimism, and cognitive dissonance. Beliefs—and consequently choices—depend not only on relevant information, but also on what makes the decision maker better-off. In an associated experiment, subjects who stood to gain from an increase in the price of a financial asset predicted higher prices than subjects who stood to gain from a decrease in price. Consistent with the model, better information resulted in a smaller bias, but incentives for accuracy made no difference. JEL classification: D01,D03,D80,D81,D83,D84.

Intuitionistic Fuzzy Decision Analysis with Dissonance Reduction for Optimistic/pessimistic Decision Makers

The theory of Atanassov’s intuitionistic fuzzy sets has been developed and has been successfully applied in the field of multiple criteria analysis. However, there is a lack of information about the role of optimism and pessimism on subjective judgments and cognitive dissonance accompanying the decision process. This paper presents a new method of reducing cognitive dissonance and relating opti...

CEP Discussion Paper No 1047 March 2011 ( updated December 2011 ) Priors and Desires

This paper offers a simple but powerful model of wishful thinking, cognitive dissonance, and related biases. Choices maximize subjective expected utility, but beliefs depend on the decision maker's interests as well as on relevant information. Simplifying assumptions yield a representation in which the payoff in an event affects beliefs as if it were part of the evidence about its likelihood. A...

Cognitive Dissonance, Pessimism, and Behavioral Spillover Effects

This paper reports results from a unique two-stage experiment designed to examine the spillover effects of optimism and pessimism. In stage 1, we induce optimism or pessimism onto subjects by randomly assigning a high or low piece rate for performing a cognitive task. We find that participants receiving the low piece rate are significantly more pessimistic with respect to performance on this ta...

A Model of Payoff-Dependent Beliefs

This paper introduces an axiomatic model of decision making where a person's subjective judgment as to the likelihood of different states of nature depends upon her anticipated payoff in those states. In the resulting representation the payoff consequences of an event affect beliefs as if they were part of the evidence about its likelihood. A parameter determines both the direction and weight o...
